PNG uses lossless compression and can keep transparent pixels. JPG uses lossy compression and is designed to represent photographs efficiently.

Choose PNG for structure

Logos, interface captures, diagrams and graphics with hard edges usually survive better as PNG.

Choose JPG for photographs

For camera images without transparency, JPG remains widely compatible and can be much smaller than PNG.
